I Am
Written and Directed by Ashton Barlow
“I Am who I Am”
When Rylee comes out to his father, John, as transgender, John, afraid, explodes and doesn't accept the change in his child's life. John then meets a strange woman, Sasha, who calls herself "I Am." She leads him on a journey where he sees how his own life mirrors his son's, and eventually, John still doesn't fully understand, but realizes the importance of accepting his son as he is, as a beloved child of God.
This production was made possible with generous support from the Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC) through the Institute on Teaching and Learning for Campus-wide Interfaith Excellence in the form of funds awarded to Nebraska Wesleyan University. With these funds, we were not only given the ability to provide costuming and scenic elements, but we were also given the ability to provide crucial and necessary LGBTQIA+ inclusion resource boards on either side of the performance venue in hopes that any and all are able to take intentional time to review. We are hopeful to provide an experience that fosters a spirit of inclusivity, dialogue, and understanding on campus and beyond, which empowers NWU students and all to explore complex intersections of trans+ life and faith in this work.
The world premiere of “I Am” was at Nebraska Wesleyan University and utilized resources provided there. We hope to continue to share this powerful story with people all around the world. Stay tuned for “I Am” updates in the future!
